What's Polluting my Neighborhood?
Tools & Resources for Everyone
Tuesday, October 26, 2004
Our October discussion, "What's
Polluting My Neighborhood? Tools & Resources for
Everyone," provided community members with an
opportunity to share and learn about how community
members and organizations have gotten information
about local pollution and environmental health issues.
To add to the discussion, we invited a few organizations
and individuals to talk about their own work on investigating
local environmental and health issues in the Bayview:
- Maurice
Campbell, Community Co-Chair of the Hunters
Point Shipyard Restoration Advisory Board (RAB)
and long-time community activist, spoke about how
he and other community members did their own investigation
on the history of radiological research and possible
radiological contamination at the Hunters Point
Naval Shipyard and the Naval Radiological Defense
Laboratory.
- Jack Lendvay, Assistant Professor of Environmental
Science and Chair of the Environmental Science/Environmental
Studies Department at University of San Francisco
(USF), spoke about how students from USF
and Literacy
for Environmental Justice collected water quality
data in Yosemite Slough and South Basin.
- Sherlina Nageer, Environmental Health and Justice
Manager at Literacy
for Environmental Justice (LEJ), spoke about
LEJ's efforts to investigate and research Bayview
health and environmental justice concerns.
About Our Community Environmental
Education Series
The Community Window on the
Hunters Point Shipyard Cleanup hosts monthly discussions
for the Bayview Community to keep you informed
of important current environmental issues and
how they affect your community. These events usually
begin with a brief presentation on the month's
topic followed by a friendly, informal group discussion.
They are held on the fourth Tuesday of every month
at 6:00PM at our office at 4634 Third Street (between
Newcomb and McKinnon) in San Francisco's Bayview
neighborhood. These discussions are free and open
to everyone in the Bayview/Hunters Point community.
